Desperate to save animals from life threatening injuries, veterinary nurse Mei Watanabe wishes her magic could do more than soothe their pain.

When Mei finds a peculiar book, she conjures a portal into a Shōgunate ruled fantasy world. The source of her magic and the question of her absent father’s identity become clear as she discovers she is half Yōsei, an elemental being. But Mei’s heritage and unusual magic make her the target of dangerous yōkai and vengeful samurai.

Mei must decide whether to cross through the portal and return to the safety of home or remain in this magical world to attend the Imperial University for Mages. If she stays, she can learn to magically heal animals, but it might cost her own life.

Kiyoko, a fire Yōsei, and graduate of the Imperial University, has spent most of her life working to become a master fire mage. When she lets the fire within fuel her temper, she is expelled from her prestigious apprenticeship. Fleeing from samurai soldiers, she returns to the Imperial University.

While working towards a new apprenticeship, Kiyoko uncovers a sinister plot to attack the university. If she wants to save the university, Kiyoko must risk losing her new apprenticeship to discover which of her mentors is conjuring evil yōkai spirits.
